Durango’s City Council has recently undertaken several initiatives aimed at addressing pressing community concerns, including housing affordability, public safety, and the continuation of essential services.
Elimination of Minimum Lot Sizes for Detached ADUs
In a move to increase housing options, the council voted to eliminate minimum lot size requirements for detached accessory dwelling units (ADUs). This decision is expected to facilitate the construction of additional housing units, thereby addressing the city’s housing shortage.
Regulation of Automated License Plate Readers
Responding to privacy concerns, the council is considering an ordinance to regulate the use of automated license plate readers (ALPRs). The proposed ordinance includes provisions for judicial warrant requirements and the establishment of a community oversight board to ensure responsible use of surveillance technology.
Continuation of Community Corrections Services
To maintain vital community corrections services, the council approved leasing city-owned property at 1050 Avenida del Sol to Advantage Treatment Center, Inc. This lease ensures the continuation of services that have been in place since 1983, following the anticipated closure of the previous provider due to funding issues.
These actions reflect the council’s commitment to addressing the evolving needs of Durango’s residents through thoughtful policy decisions.
